As more publishers revisit older titles with modern remakes, it’s impossible to ignore the incredible selection of PSP games that deserve the same treatment. The PlayStation Portable was home to many beloved experiences that pianototo pushed the boundaries of handheld gaming. While some have been ported or emulated, many of the best PSP games have yet to receive the visual and mechanical updates they deserve for today’s audience.
One standout is Daxter, the vibrant platformer spin-off from the Jak and Daxter series. This game showcased the PSP’s power and design potential, offering refined gameplay and fantastic visuals for the time. A remake with modern graphics and smoother controls would likely find a huge audience. Similarly, Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror combined stealth, action, and storytelling in a way that rivaled console titles. Updating this for modern hardware could revitalize interest in the stealth genre.
Then there’s Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, which has already seen a remaster, but many fans still hope for a full-blown remake in the style of Final Fantasy VII Remake. The original PSP version had compelling characters and rich lore that deepened the Final Fantasy universe, but its combat and visuals now feel dated. With today’s technology, a reimagined Crisis Core could become one of the best games of a new generation.
These titles—and many others—highlight just how much untapped potential exists in the PSP library. As the industry continues to mine its past for future hits, there’s every reason to believe that these gems will one day get the remakes they deserve, introducing them to entirely new audiences.
